25 Candles

Happy birthday to me! As I’m writing this, it’s the morning of my 25th birthday.

A quarter-century.

If you know me, you know that I’m a very sentimental person. Everything means something, and this birthday is no exception. For me, birthdays symbolize a new chapter that’s waiting to be explored. They’re also a great time to reflect on all of your growth.

The past 25 years have been filled with ups and downs, hard lessons, and countless blessings. I always joke that I feel like I’ve already lived a thousand lives, and it’s true. From childhood to young adulthood, I've been in a constant state of metamorphosis. I’m not the same person I was in high school or college. Hell, I’m not even the same version of myself from last year.

With each new chapter comes a new journey. Sometimes the journey doesn’t always go how you planned. If you asked 10-year-old Hanifah where I’d be at age 25, I probably would have said married with kids living in a penthouse suite. While that’s not quite where I landed, I’m happy with my current destination.

That wasn’t always the case. Something I’ve learned is that we have to embrace our lows along with our highs. Allow yourself to be vulnerable and in tune with who you are. If I had to give one piece of wisdom to my younger self, it would be: “Love and accept yourself for who you truly are. Never let anyone make you feel bad for that. If you aren't their cup of tea, they can stay thirsty.”

I’m happy knowing that there are countless roads for me to take and adventures that are calling my name. But for now, I’m going to spend my 25th birthday doing things that bring me joy.

  • I’m going to dance alone in my apartment. (You can really get loose when no one’s watching)

  • Get a massage and RELAX. (With proper precautions of course)

  • Pick up a case of macarons. (My go-to sweet treat when I want to feel fancy and luxurious)

  • Put on a new outfit and order Indian food. (My ultimate comfort cuisine)

I’m not sure what 25 will bring, but I can’t wait to see what’s in store!
