Redheads Have More Fun (ft. As I Am Curl Color Collection)

There comes a time where you just want to shake things up a little. Trying out a new hair color is a great way to spruce up your look and try something new!

When I was 18, I went through a bit of a color phase. I dyed my hair every color you could think of: blonde, pink, blue, green, etc. It was all fun and games until I dyed my hair red before going to college (big mistake). Red hair is notoriously difficult to take care of and long story short – my hair got hella damaged.

Despite my love for colored hair, I would always cringe at the idea of dyeing it again. I worked so hard to get my natural curls healthy again, was I ready to jeopardize that for a new hair color?

As I started to contemplate going red again, my friend Brooke sent me a link to the As I Am Curl Color Collection and I knew it was meant to be! It's only $7.99 and a major steal! Temporary color gels are a great way to play around with color (minus the damage to your tresses). Once my package arrived, I immediately wanted to try it out.

Here is my honest review of the product:

First Impressions:

I originally ordered one container, so I was pleasantly surprised to find three in my package along with a very kind email. As I Am earned double points for customer service and made me feel special (like the wannabe influencer I am).

The color gel has a very creamy consistency and smells amazing! The jar is 6 oz and was filled to the brim with product.

Brooke tried the product on wet hair and told me that there wasn’t a lot of color payoff, so I opted to let my hair dry in braids. Once my hair dried, I detangled and massaged the color cream onto my hair beginning at the ends. Then, I started a perm rod set and let it dry for two days.

Pros:

I.Love.This.Look! The red looks amazing and the perm rod set came out super defined. I can’t speak for the other colors but the red is extremely pigmented (this can also be a con). As someone with thick 4c hair, it’s not rare for me to use an entire container for one style.

With the Curl Color, I only used ⅓ of the jar and still got amazing results. I didn’t add any other products and my perm rod set came out extremely defined!

Cons:

This product can be messy if you aren’t careful! The color only transfers when you touch it, so it’s unlikely to end up on your pillows or headscarves. I sleep with a silk bonnet and I didn’t notice any stains when I removed it in the morning.

However, I have a bad habit of touching my hair a lot and got red smudges all over my *white* bathroom counters. Thankfully I had an extra Magic Eraser sponge on deck so it wasn’t too difficult to clean up.

It also got all over my hands and made my fingers look like I just finished a bag of Hot Cheetos. It didn’t stain, but I didn’t enjoy having to wash my hands every time I moved my hair out of my face.

Final Thoughts:

I highly recommend this product, but if I will probably save it for special occasions. It’s very easy to apply and has a beautiful undertone that compliments my complexion. It can be difficult to find the perfect shade of red and As I Am killed it!

While it can be messy, I would just advise extra precaution around light surfaces. My hair looks so nice (Masha’Allah), I’m starting to seriously think about dyeing my hair red permanently!

Have you tried this product or something similar? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
